What is the difference between 18650 lithium battery and soft pack lithium battery?

2022-02-25

The intuitive difference between the 18650 lithium battery and the soft-packed lithium battery is that the 18650 lithium battery is a cylindrical steel shell battery with basically the same size, while the soft-packed lithium battery may have any shape and size. It is an aluminum-plastic film packaged battery.
The difference between 18650 lithium battery and soft pack lithium battery is that the materials used, such as electrolyte, conductive agent, electric formula ratio, etc., are different from the inside, and the production process is also different. 18650 lithium batteries are individually encapsulated in steel casings (18 indicates a diameter of 18mm, 65 indicates a length of 65mm, and 0 indicates a cylindrical battery). The outer packaging of the lithium polymer soft pack battery is made of aluminum-plastic film, and the internal electric sheet and the barrier are stacked (layers are overlapped).
Another difference between the 18650 lithium battery and the soft pack lithium battery is that the state of the electrolyte inside the battery is different: the electrolyte inside the lithium polymer soft pack battery is a polymer, which is either gel or solid, while the electrolyte inside the 18650 lithium battery is individually is liquid.

The third difference is in the lithium battery rate high current discharge performance. Soft-pack lithium batteries can achieve higher rates than 18650 lithium batteries, and in terms of high-current discharge stability, soft-pack lithium batteries have better performance. In terms of equivalent discharge requirements and capacity reduction, soft-pack lithium batteries can customize the corresponding shape batteries according to the space conditions of the product battery compartment to achieve a more lightweight form.
